Menjangan Island – All you need to know

Situated off the north-west coast of Bali, Menjangan Island is renowned for stunning coral reefs, diverse marine life and the many deer that call it home.

Open only to day-trippers, here is what you can expect when visiting:

Clear waters and great visibility – the waters around Menjangan Island are known for their clarity, offering excellent visibility for both divers and snorkellers. You’ll be able to see colourful coral formations and a variety of marine species.

Rich Marine Biodiversity – Menjangan Island is part of the West Bali National Park, which means it is well preserved and protected, therefore teeming with marine life. Keep an eye out for vibrant reef fish, sea turtles, moray eels, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot some larger species like reef sharks or manta rays.

Diverse Dive Sites – there are several dive sites around Menjangan Island catering to divers of all levels. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver, you will find sites suitable for your skill level. The underwater landscapes range from gentle slopes to dramatic drop-offs and walls covered in colourful corals.  The walls surrounding the island are really what makes this a must-do location for divers.

Snorkelling Opportunities – Even if you are not a certified diver, you can still enjoy the beauty of Menjangan Island’s underwater world through snorkelling. Many of the same sites accessible to divers are also great for snorkelling, with shallow reefs surrounding the island  being ideal for observing colourful coral formations and a myriad of tropical fish species. You can expect to encounter vibrant coral gardens teeming with life, including butterflyfish, parrotfish, angelfish, and many more.  The chance to do a drift snorkel atop some of the drop-offs is one of the best things to do in Bali. 

Pristine Environment – Menjangan Island is relatively untouched compared to some other diving destinations in the region. Its protected status ensures that the reefs remain healthy and vibrant, providing a memorable experience for visitors while preserving the marine ecosystem for future generations.

Always respect the marine environment by practicing responsible diving and snorkelling habits, such as avoiding touching or damaging the coral and marine life. Additionally, always dive or snorkel with a reputable operator who prioritise safety and environmental conservation.

In recent times I have used “Menjangan Frogi” who can organise transfers to the area as well as either a private or shared boat trip with skipper and guide.  Typically a half day snorkelling trip with basic lunch and equipment will be Rp700,000 to Rp900,000 per person.  Idris is another good operator and charges a similar amount.

To visit Menjangan, you are best to stay overnight in one of the nearby towns or cities.  Closest are the resorts in West Bali National Park and also Gerokgak.  About 30 minutes away is the popular coastal area of Pemuteran and an hour away is Lovina, the most popular area to stay with a wide choice of hotels, resorts and villas, plus a range of other activities to do (dolphin-watching and waterfalls).  Please note these times are approximate and only cover the distance to the port, you will need to add in boat travel from the port to Menjangan Island which can take 30 to 40 minutes depending on conditions and vessel.
